Pre Conference Activities

Mix & Mingle and Art Show

A Pre-Conference Mix and Mingle event will take place on Tuesday, Feb 21st  in the Calgary Zoo Conservatory. This prairie and grassland themed art show will feature local artists with a variety of art modalities that showcase the unique features of the northern great plains. All conference participants are invited to come, grab a cocktail or mocktail, enjoy scrumptious hors d'oeuvres, and view pieces of beautiful local art while having the chance to network with other  conference participants.

Prairie Pollinators with the ANBC

Join the Alberta Native Bee Council (ANBC) for a fascinating 2-hour workshop exploring everything bees and pollinators with a focus on those found in Alberta. Other topics to be covered include what ANBC is doing to help bees and what we can to help ensure their continued presence in our ecosystems.

Location: Safari Lodge A

Time: 3:00 PM-5:00 PM

Communication Keys

This hands-on workshop will help build skills to improve your science communication and presentation skills, enhanced with some creative flair! Topics to be discussed include impromptu speaking, science communication to both a technical and non technical audience, and media communication techniques.  Join Andrea Hanson (Olds College) and Sean Feagan (Nature Conservancy of Canada) for this informative, interactive and fun skill building session!

Location: Safari Lodge B

Time: 2:30PM- 4:30PM

Prairie Invertebrates 

This workshop explores some of the insects that can be found within prairie ecosystems. Ken Fry, Ph.D (Olds College) will speak on ecological roles of insects on the prairies, beneficial insects ( predators, parasitoids), decomposers, as well as common herbivores of native plants. Specimens for examination will also be provided!

Location: Enmax Conservatory Classroom

Time: 2:00 PM-5:00 PM
